The A2 Certificate of Competency

What is the A2 Certificate of Competency?

The A2 CofC is a CAA recognised qualification, which demonstrates that an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) remote pilot assures safe operations of drones close to uninvolved persons in the Open Category of UAS operations.

The key benefits of the A2 CofC are:

It will let the pilot fly a C2 classified aircraft down to a maximum distance of 30m horizontally from uninvolved people
Up to 5m horizontally in 'low-speed mode'
No horizontal take-off restrictions for aircraft in the A1 category
Certification allows you to fly your drone for commercial gain (as long as the appropriate insurance in in place)
The A2 CofC lasts for five years from date of issue and no fee is required to be paid to the CAA

The A2CofC certification process comprises the successful completion of our online and invigilated theory exam only. There is no requirement for a Practical Flight Assessment, but you will have to declare to the CAA that your are competent to fly your drone.

A2 CofC - Online Course

Our A2 CofC online course is provided by 3iC Ltd who are a CAA approved UAS Recognised Assessment Entity (RAE) No.1625.

The course covers the theory syllabus as set by the CAA comprising Meteorology, UAS Flight Performance and UAS Operating Principles.

You won't get piles of reference material to wade through or expect you to take time off from your day job! All information is simply laid out, easy to read and take onboard. The presentation is also available for download.

You can pause or stop a module at any time and resume at a later date. You can also revise completed modules and we provide a sample exam paper for you to go through. When you're ready contact us and we will arrange your online theory exam at a time that suits you.

A2 CofC - Exam & Certifciation

The A2 CofC examination consists of 30 multi-choice question and is held online in accordance with CAA requirements. Your allocated invigilator will assist you to set this up. It is a good idea to make sure that you really know the subject matter before attempting the exam.

Before you are issued with an A2 CofC certificate, the CAA requires you to make a declaration that you are competent to fly in the Open Category of current UAS Legislation. For this, you must ensure that you are well-practised in the type of operations you will be using the A2CofC for.

You may find that some additional practical flight training would be helpful to you and ensure that you are fully capable of competent UAS operation within the Open Category. Flight training is held at our flying site in North Hampshire.

Flight Level Drones has exclusive access to the grounds of Chawton House near Winchester in Hampshire. It is famous by association with Jane Austen and is located in the village of Chawton just off the A31/A32 roundabout South West of Alton. Training sessions are in a mown field providing fantastic photo opportunities around this truly historical and picturesque site.
